& C100 Startup Challenge

September 15th to 17th, 2015

Venture North was the first conference of its kind hosted by The C100 to showcase the Toronto-Waterloo region's most promising startups with the backdrop of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). We selected a group of 25 U.S.-based Investors and VCs to attend the conference. Our international guests received red carpet access to Hollywood actors, film screenings, premier parties and participated in one-on-one meetings with over 30 of the most innovative entrepreneurs within the region's startup ecosystem.

C100 Startup CHALLENGE

The C100 hosted our first-ever C100 Startup Competition as part of Venture North. Before we kicked things off, we hosted a fireside chat with U.S. investors Scott Bonham (GGV Capital), Angela Strange (Andreessen Horowitz), Ajay Royan (Mithril Capital) and Andrew Parker (Spark Capital). This discussion was followed by a pitch competition by 7 promising local startups including Plooto, SparkGig, Suncayr, Bridgit, Medella Health, and Sampler. The winner of the competition was Bridgit, who took home a check for $15,000.

“The Toronto-Waterloo region is home to one of the largest and most dynamic startup ecosystems in the world. These companies bring a wealth of transformative innovations to market and also play a critical role in job creation across the province. Venture North will help connect venture capitalists, innovators, and entrepreneurs to scale up Ontario’s startups and shape the region as the world’s next powerhouse for tech commercialization.”
— Brad Duguid, Minister of Economic Development, Employment & Infrastructure
“We’re working in concert with the Ontario Government and other partners through Venture North to give our promising startups an opportunity to showcase their innovative products to potential investors. Toronto-Waterloo is on the verge of becoming the next Silicon Valley. Introducing the quality of the region’s startups to international venture investors will create more growth opportunities so these companies can become major global players.”
— Scott Bonham, Co-Chair of C100 and Co-Founder of GGV Capital
